Republican Convention Update
The lengthy transformation from hockey arena to convention center has begun at the Xcel Energy Center in Minneapolis, home of the 2008 Republican National Convention. Some facts about the preparation:
* Crews will install nearly six miles of phone and Internet cable, including 4,500 data and analog lines.
* Cellular providers will be increasing service capacity, and state-of-the-art technology will be installed to provide real-time access to convention activities around the world.
* The convention will have an estimated $160 million economic impact on the area, benefitting many local workers who are struggling in the current economy.
* Veteran contractors Freeman and Company, who have handled many other Republican conventions, are overseeing the buildout at the arena.
